Draw 1 vs Draw 3 in Klondike Solitaire: which should you play?
In Klondike Solitaire, draw one deals a single card from the stock at a time and is easier to win; draw three deals three at a time and is the harder, classic game. If you’re new, start with draw one. If you want the traditional challenge, play draw three. That’s the short answer; here’s the detail.
What is the difference?
The only rule that changes is how many cards you turn from the stock (the pile you tap when you’re out of moves):
- Draw 1 turns one card. Every card in the stock is immediately playable, so you see and use more of the deck.
- Draw 3 turns three at a time and you can only play the top one. Cards get buried, so you have to plan and cycle the stock more carefully.
Which is easier to win?
Draw one, clearly. Because every stock card is reachable, a large share of draw-one deals are winnable with good play. Draw three buries roughly two of every three stock cards behind others, so more deals are unwinnable no matter how well you play, and the ones that are winnable demand more foresight.
When should you play each?
- Play draw 1 when you’re learning, want a relaxing game, or want to chase a winning streak.
- Play draw 3 when you want the classic difficulty, a longer think, or to sharpen your planning.
Neither is “correct.” They’re two games sharing a board. Many players keep draw one for casual sessions and switch to draw three when they want a fight.
A few tips for draw 3
- Cycle the whole stock early to learn where key cards sit.
- Don’t rush aces and twos up to the foundations; you may need them on the tableau.
- Prefer moves that expose face-down cards over moves that just tidy the board.
